Later

Despite what I’d said to Vlad I was sure Morgan would call. I’d been scanning my news feeds and recording every scrap of information I could from my network when the phone rang. I answered it.

“Hi Uncle Frank,” Morgan said before I could greet her.

“Morgan,” I replied, then continued, “are you okay?”

“Not really, I was in LA last week and had been thinking of staying another couple of days.” The implications of that decision were left unsaid.

“Where are you now?” I asked. She sounded so cold and distant, it was nothing like my fiery and temperamental niece.

“I’m back in New York,” there was a hesitation in her tone then she continued, “Uncle Frank have you been watching the news?”

“I’ve been doing nothing but watching the news and searching for information. I have been using every computer system I have to search for information.”

She giggled nervously.

“What?” I asked.

“You are such a dork Uncle Frank. Every new gadget that has ever come out you had to have it first. You are the biggest techno junkie I’ve ever known,” she was still giggling as she spoke.

“I get it from my father,” I said with a deep chuckle, before I quickly sobered. “What about the news Mog?” I asked using her childhood nickname.

“The riots”

“What about them?” I asked unsure what she meant. There were reports of riots in nearly every major city on the globe still standing.

“I don’t think they’re regular riots. I was in LA during the riots in the nineties… this is different.”

My blood went icy in my veins. I’d been seeing and reading the reports of the riots since this all started. I knew I was about to get first hand confirmation of my worst fears.

“The dead Uncle Frank… the dead are getting back up and killing people.” The coldness and shock was gone from her voice and was replaced by fear. Now that she’d started she wasn’t going to stop until she’d related everything, fear or no fear.

“I was at the coffee shop on my block when it happened. This man came stumbling down the street, he looked and acted drunk but I could smell it Uncle Frank, he was dead.” Morgan paused to take a drink of something then continued, “He attacked a woman sitting at a sidewalk table. She screamed and thrashed but he ripped a chunk from her shoulder… and he ate it. She fell to the ground screeching and tried to keep her blood in her neck.”

I almost asked her a question but I feared if I did it would throw her off. I stayed quiet but ideas were running through my head. It couldn’t be a Ghoul or a Vampire, one wouldn’t behave that way and the other couldn’t be out in daylight. A Werewolf was unlikely although not impossible, however I was sure I could rule that one out as well. Morgan said he smelled dead and adding that to what I’d been catching traces of online, I was sure we were well and truly screwed no matter how fast we acted.
